Starting a new commercial real estate development company is not a simple task. When Acqudev opened our doors in July of 2016, I had full intentions on starting this blog to chronicle my journey into a new industry and to help anyone interested in commercial real estate development understand what it takes to get started. Well, six months later I have started. Not because I found the down time to develop a marketing plan and created a stellar social media campaign (haven’t made it that far just yet), but because creating a blog is part of my capstone course to finalize my MBA. Thankfully, my professor allowed me to blog about my new company and I believe this is the push I needed to get things moving. For anyone who follows along, I will write a blog entry for each chapter in the book “Gaining & Sustaining Competitive Advantage” by Jay B. Barney and how it pertains to my company. The following topics will be covered followed by more in depth topics as I learn more about the industry and what it takes to succeed.
- Firm Performance and Competitive Advantage
- Evaluating Environmental Threats
- Evaluating Environmental Opportunities
- Evaluating Firm Strengths and Weaknesses
- Product Differentiation
- Cost Leadership
- Flexibility: Real Options Analysis Under Risk and Uncertainty
- Tacit Collusion: Cooperation to Reduce Competition
- Vertical Integration Strategies
- Diversification Strategies
- Implementing Corporate Diversification
- Merger and Acquisition Strategies
Writing about the above topics not only satisfies my blog requirements, but also forces me to think critically about my business and I believe sets me up for future success. Additionally, these twelve articles give me a good foundation to start to be creative and dive into other more specific topics surrounding a career in commercial real estate development. I’m not a professional writer so I appreciate your patience and hope to provide some valuable insight in each post I share.
